Product Feature - The Album Builder

This post is a fun one because it's being co-written by Noelle and I. I will be the BLUE text and Noelle will be Orange. Okay, me first...

We both recently started using the Album Builder and no joke it's one of my most favorite tools (and super TIME SAVING) tools to date! Because it's saving each of us so much time and making our lives so much easier, we couldn't wait to tell you about it too!
If ever there was a time that I just happened to run into the right person at the right time, the Fiano booth at WPPI was it! I was in the booth browsing albums when I saw 2 guys taking pictures with their iPhones of an album. When they looked done, I asked if I could see it. They told me it was their images, I smiled and gave an 'oh, awesome' and started to flip through. I immediately realized these images were taken in the great North West and asked where they were from, turns out they are in Portland too!

Well as fate would have it, we ended up on the same flight back to Portland. I sat in-between Fundy and Focht of Left Turn Studios and we talked the whole flight home. Fundy pulled out his laptop to show me some of the awesome stuff they do - and - awesome in an understatement! Three of the things they showed me are my current favorite products (you know the type when you don't know how you lived with out it before) it's  the Mobile Fotographer-Studio Management, Touch Flow (but those are another post) for today, we want to tell you about the The Album Builder!

When I won the album certificate from Vision Art at WPPI the first thing I said to Leah was:

"Leah, I need to find some album templates!"

But Leah kept telling me no, (she does that sometimes). She kept saying that templates are too confining and that I would constantly find that the template wouldn't match how many pictures or sizes I was needing to fit for the layout.  She said that I'd find that when I'm trying to use a template sometimes it's hard to get the portrait photos to match the number of portrait boxes and then sometimes you have to leave out a good photo because it doesn't match the layout of things.

Oh...  I hadn't thought of that before but at the same time I knew I needed it simple and templates seemed like the obvious solution.  Then I thought about hiring out the design work.  I heard that Jasmine Star doesn't like designing albums so she hires out but after looking into the cost, that adds more then I can justify to my bottom line. With Leah making some strong arguments against album templates and hiring out tooexpensive the only option seemed to spend countless hours working at building albums from scratch. Not appealing!

Then the clouds parted and the sun shone down, and there might even have been some singing.

When Leah told me I had to get this Album Builder I thought to myself, "Really?  Do I really need it?"  But I trust Leah and I trust the man behind the product, so I got it.  Let me tell you what!  It is amazing!  You install Album Builder in Photoshop, where I make my albums, and it takes the major mechanical thinking out of it.  I'm a photographer/artist first so when I have to think of size of photos, to how many photos, to the size of the album, well all those ratios just hurt my brain.  I have to do lots of thinking and lots of trial and error.  With Album Builder I type how many photos I want on one page or a spread and it'll do it for me.  Then I just drag and drop my photo, without having to resize it, and it's done.  THEN if I want to add an action to that particular photo I can do it in Album Builder!  I can change the coloring of the background with a click and there are NO templates that I HAVE to stay with.  I can change how many pictures I want, and move the collage or row of photos anywhere on the page.  It gives you endless possibilities and the freedom to choose just how you want it.  I cannot even say how much of a time saver this is!  Album Builder will cut your time making albums, I personally believe, by 75% or more.  And as a photographer we are always in need of more time.  I firmly believe every photographer that offers albums, especially wedding photographers, need this product.

I try to avoid wedding photography, my work is as a portrait photographer but albums are every bit as much a critical part of my business as they are for a wedding photographer. I want all my clients to have an album or an image box so that I know they have a tangible keepsake to remember this time in their life. I'm passionate about it so it's easy to sell, in fact 90% of all my clients order albums or image boxes so I do a lot of albums! I have been designing all my albums from scratch (you know from above why I don't like templates and I'm too neurotic to be able to let someone else design it for me). But despite how much i love handing over an album to a client,  I couldn't stand how long it took me to put it together, but I just didn't see a good alternative. Designing an album typically took me between 5 and 7 hours and as much as I don't want to admit it, sometimes longer, time consuming for sure!

Last week I had a mom call, she wanted two Senior albums in time for their graduation open house which was in 2 weeks. I needed to design 2 different albums for two girls and have them ready to send to print the next day if I had any chance at getting them in time. I was dreading the process until I realized I should try my new album builder. Each album only took me ONE HOUR to build!! So ummm yes, I'm a huge fan!

The coolest part is that there is a 2 week Free Trial so go try it for yourself! You can thank me later! ;)
And you will! :)

Virtual Wealth} IE: The Barter System

In 1926, Frederick Soddy a Nobel Prize winning chemist wrote a book entitled Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt. He was a man ahead of his time and argued that real wealth was in the power to derive materials into physical goods and services. With that theory, an important question can be asked - if you cannot feel the effects of the wealth, is it really there?

image from bartertheatre.com

Money is of course a vital part to any business. Without funds coming in, the lights cannot stay on. But what about when money needs to go out? Is there a way to trade talent for talent? An opportunity where both parties can walk away satisfied and appeased? Absolutely, it's called BARTERING!

We are on a tight budget. With a husband in grad school, our spending has to be carefully monitored and sometimes (okay more then sometimes) that can be a real party crasher. Unless I can find another way... And I'm queen of alternative options. It comes with an 'if you say I can't I'll prove that I can' type 'A personality. I've traded my photography services for baby-sitting (that’s seriously huge, do you know the price of a babysitter these days?), house cleaning, massage, sewing lessons, having a server built for me, clothing, SEO optimization, salon services and more.

After several trades, I've had some go fabulously and others not so much. Here are some tricks I've picked up along the way.

1. Be generous! My photography services are not priced at a bargain. Neither would I expect someone who's trading with me to cut me a deal. Time is time for all of us! Let me give you the example of babysitting.  I always ask what amount they feel would be a fair price, but with that I already have a number in my head that I'm thinking of. I've never had anyone suggest that number, so I let them suggest what they feel is a fair price and I say, 'okay, well I would like to trade at $x.xx per hour, is that okay with you?' Of course it is, it's usually at least $10 more per hour then they suggested. It's important to me that the trade feels like a win - win. Being generous assures me that the person on the other end of the trade won't get burnt out or end up feeling taken advantage of.

2. Keep Track! This is pretty obvious but it must be reiterated! Make a log and keep meticulous track of the hours and suggest that they do as well. I use an hours tracker app on my iPhone.

3. Make it worth your time. Trading services takes up time! There is the session, editing and the fact that you probably will not be getting any sales from it either. When you’re having a late night editing session is the trade still going to have its appeal? I've made some trades more because I knew they didn't have the money then for reasoning that I needed what they were offering but the simple truth is that that was time away from my kids and hubby that was lost to me. Be picky about what you trade, your time is a valuable commodity, if you don't believe me just look at your kids.

4. How do you find trades? If you want to start looking for trades, here is an idea. Next time you need something start looking around within your social circle (for babysitting and things of that nature) or at small businesses and look for someone who either loves your work or has a need for good photography. Pictures sell and I've seen a lot of websites where everything is looking good until you click on the thumbnail. In such a case, your services truly can be invaluable.

5. Business is still business! It's important to still keep yourself on an appropriate time line. I've made the mistake of taking on a trade session when I was way to busy with paid work and making a terrible impression with that family because I had to many other clients that simply had to come first. Honestly, it still haunts me today! Now when people approach me with trades I plan only for either slow season or when it's a good fit in my calendar and I explain why.

Disclaimer: Try not to be disappointed when someone doesn't want to trade. They may not have the extra time or be in a financial situation where it's possible for them. Also be aware of trades that cost the other side money. There may be a small amount invested on the photography end of the deal, but very little. We offer a service, not a good.  Be aware that you may be asking for a lot if you want a good taken right off the shelf and handed to you. I find people are much more apt to trade if it's service based to service based bartering.

Bartering services are meant to be fun.  Don't set over the top expectations but instead just play around with it and see where it takes you! There's a bit of a learning curve to it at first but after a few great trades, you may just find yourself hooked! Let me tell you how fabulous it was to have a massage therapist come into my home and give my husband and I each an hour-long massage! Or being able to take a college photography class because I traded baby-sitting for Senior pictures. The key is to set reasonable expectations before the trade is made and make sure that both parties feel good about the offer, if you've got that part handled correctly, trading can make you feel like you're living the good life without ever spending a cent!

Free Download - Announcements, Announcements...

It's 2:59am and my head has hit the desk twice! If I make no sense or my spelling is atrocious be kind to me please, I've spent my sleeping hours designing this for you! As soon as I saw the Heirloom Paper pack from Sassy-Designs I knew I wanted to do something with it! So generous Terry of Sassy-Designs sent over the pack and let me get to work on creating a fun download to share with all of you! For this month's free download I thought I would create some announcements after all spring is here and that means... Babies, Weddings and Graduation! So I'm hoping this will help jump start you on your way to lots of joyful announcements. These were created using CS4. In this download you will find 3 layered 5x7 templates for your personal/professional photography use!  You will need photoshop and some knowledge of layers and clipping masks to use this download.

Click image to enlarge! All images by me (Leah Remillet Photography)

Please note this template is available for your use personally or to sell as a finished product to your photography clients. You absolutely may not share, sell or "borrow" any parts of this template. If we become aware that you have done so you will be contacted immediately by thousands of people after we report you're the reason no more free downloads are coming. So just don't do it!

Instead, share the love. If you're excited about this template others probably will be too... And you know how excited I get when you all share Go{4}Pro Photos with other photographers and friends. So share a link on your blog, forums, facebook or via twitter and  make someone else's day brighter! You will for sure brighten mine!

DOWNLOAD
Thanks Terry for making an additional download link!

**** I'm so sorry to everyone who is having trouble opening the save the date once downloaded. I changed some preferences and uploaded a new link and really hope that will fix the problem! Terry is also looking into it for me and I'll update again if it needs to be changed.

This is a new link (as of 10:30am PST) for those who were having trouble, please let me know if this fixed it for you! If you know why this happened, please educate me so it won't next time! Ugh!! Thanks everyone!

Twitter gets you free stuff!

I wanted to let you know that if you're not following Go{4}Pro on Twitter you should! Twitter has been something I've really struggled with. Honestly I just didn't get it, and I still don't! However, despite that I knew I wanted to utilize it, I just wasn't sure how. I've decided Twitter is where I will tell you about all the things that may not be appropriate as a full post. For example I heard an awesome FREE webinar Thursday night hosted by Photography School House and Sandy Puc from her Bellies to Baby series, there will be a part 2 the end of April so thats something I would tweet about.

So twitter will be dedicated to free stuff, cool finds and a bit of randomness! Hope to see you there!

And just in case you wanted some cool social media icons for your blog... Here is a great link!

Free Studio Management Software by StudioCloud

I have been telling myself to get organized for a year now! Seriously each month I have a little talking to with myself and I say, 'Leah! "A house of order". You have GOT TO know whats going on in your own stink'n business. Stop loosing scribbled client notes, stop frantically trying to find that one thing! STOP and get it all organized." That's what I say (in one way or another) at the start of each month but it's not what I've done. And it's been bugging me.. A LOT!

Well just this last week I found the most fantastic thing (once again thanks to napcp - have I mentioned that I LOVE them!!) and I'm happy to report that organization has commenced! It's called Studio Cloud and it's a free business management software for photogs! Oh, yes! I said free!! (holla.)

So now I'm getting all my clients, vendors and affiliates input into my management system as well as keeping track of my book keeping, sales and projects. I can even check the weather while I'm in there to see if my shoot going to be sunned or rained. It's seriously awesome thus far and I knew others would be loving the chance to get organized as well! So go check out Studio Cloud and create order and find your happy place too!

FREE DOWNLOAD - Mini Accordion Album (Spring)

Spring is right around the corner, and I can't wait! Landscapes will begin to fill in again and we photographers will get to enjoy using the beautiful backdrops that mother nature creates. In honor of spring time here is a new template for you to enjoy. This is a 3x3 square mini album that was created using the WHCC template. I thought it would be fun to have a little something new to share with clients and family for Easter, don't you? I plan to make up some of these to share with the Grandparents as a little Easter gift.

Love the Pattern? It's all thanks to Terry at Sassy Designs so make sure to say thanks for donating  'Splashy' on behalf of this fun little project!

Please note this template is available for your use personally or to sell as a finished product to your photography clients. Please do not share, sell or "borrow" any parts of this template.

Share the love. If you're excited about this template others probably will be too... So share a link on your blog, forums, facebook or via twitter and  make someone else's day brighter! If you share, leave a comment

Are you sending out a newsletter?

I just recently got signed up with Mad Mimi so that I can put out a monthly newsletter for all my clients!  I want my name and my work to stay in their heads and now they will receive a fun and creative reminder once a month! This is a screen shot of as much of my newsletter as would fit on the screen at once...

FAQS:

Why did I go with mad mimi?
Super technical answer - I'm a sucker for a red head! The real reason, I love how cute the napcp newsletter is and they go with mad mimi so I just clicked the link at the bottom and signed up. Wow. What great research skills I have.

Anyone else worth looking into?
My other favorite newsletter is from Shoot Sac and they use Mail Chimp. From what I could tell there are two major companies that it seems most photographer's use Mad Mimi and Mail Chimp.
Mail Chimp is free as long as you have 0-500 subscribers and the next package is $30 a month from 501-2,500
Mad Mimi is free up to 100 subscribers / $8 per month up to 500 subs / $10 per month up to 1000 subs.
As you can see if you have 500 or more subscribers (or think you may) it will be cheaper with Mad Mimi in the long run.

What do you think so far?
"2 Enthusiastic Thumbs Up!" - Leah of Go{4}Pro. Always wanted to see that in type! Seriously though, the newsletter was super easy to use and create. The functionality is great, it's 100% customizable so your imagination is the limit. I did have one little hick-up when at the footer I put Portland, WA. (say wait Portland is NOT in Washington) and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Sent an email to support and got a reply within about 5 minutes. So now I'm super impressed with the customer service as well!
Didn't love having to transfer all my email address and contacts into an excel spread sheet (they provide) but now realize it was the easiest way to do it... If I hadn't already done it once on a word doc I'd have seen it their way from the start. :)

Did they offer that template?
No. It's straight forward drag and drop. I created the embellishments in Photoshop, uploaded them as pictures and with the example of the 3 frame blocks - once I uploaded them I linked each image to the correct destination site. Watch the video on the home page of Mad Mimi to see what I mean.

Leah, you are awesome, how can I thank you?
Are you questioning my fake Q/A page now? Well all the same, if you want to send some love back to me I just figured out that there's a referral program so if you sign up via any of the links on this blog then something great will happen to me. Not sure what that great thing is, but great is always good! In case you didn't see the link enough, HERE it is one more time. hee. hee.

If you send out a newsletter we'd love for you to share a link in the comment box so we can all be inspired!

Free Actions!

I was going to do a tutorial on softening skin, then I was thinking about doing one on making color pop but  do you know what?  They have free actions for everything!  I LOVE actions and especially free ones.  Smashing Magazine put together The Ultimate Collection of Useful Photoshop Actions.  This post was created a year ago so some of the downloads don't work but there are PLENTY of others that do work.  Trust me, it is well worth your time!

32-action Set 53 in The Ultimate Collection Of Useful Photoshop Actions

17-soften Skin Effect in The Ultimate Collection Of Useful Photoshop Actions

Monday

FREE ACTIONS, TUTORIALS, TEXTURES, STORYBOARDS and more

You have one more day if you were thinking of showing off an image with Bokeh! Thanks to me not getting the images sized down and having to much on the plate today. Instead... I'm sending you off to another FANTASTIC blog, and if you have not found this one yet, ooooh. You are going to love me for it!!! It's called CoffeeShop, and it is a sinfully delightful little place to explore, so get some hot chocolate (I don't drink coffee) and enjoy!

It's ALL FREE textures, actions and more. It's awesome. I have so many actions lots paid for, lots free... The one action I use the very most is Coffee Shop Powder Room. Just a side note with powder room, I often use it (and ALL my actions for that matter) in completely different ways than intended. For example, I might use the soften skin layer just to blur my background a little more (hint, hint for Bokeh), or the eye pop to bling out the jewelry! What I'm saying is don't be afraid to play!!

Thursday

I love me a makeover!

I saw a blog. It was the blog of an on-location photographer and I swear I didn't even know such a thing existed before that blog, (that was 2 years ago) and that was it for me. I was head over heels, love at first sight, positively smitten with natural light, on location photography! And as I sat at my computer late into the night looking at every image he had ever posted a little birdie whispered, 'you can do that.' And so I've done (well sort of), not really there yet!
I knew NOTHING. Thats saying it mildly, I had never taken a photography class, never owned more than a p&s. Had not really heard of photoshop, let alone seen it or recognized what it could do. The only thing I did know was that I wanted to know and would know! I wanted to be and would be. Each time I would learn a new tidbit it was like Christmas!! I would be so excited and go running to tell my husband the positively incredible piece of magic I had just learned (at least that how I saw each thing - he may not have agreed when I was waking him up at 3am). One of the great things, I've learned is that most of it is not as hard as I thought it would be and the magic of it is that you can start with the basics and improve for the rest of your life.
I created this blog because I knew I wasn't the only gal trying to go pro. I wasn't the only one trying to get it all sorted out and that there was someone else like me who when learning new bits of magic had the sense of Christmas morning over and over again. It means a lot to me to be able to give back, to offer what I learn to others and give them their very own "ah-ha!" moments! I feel very honored to think that every once in a while I'm the source of that. I'm excited as readership has grown! As you can see we have a new fresh look to go with our fresh, go-get-em' attitude. I feel like I was just introduced to the power of shiny lipgloss for the first time!
I have looked in on a lot of your blogs (if you have fanned this blog). It made me so happy to see some of you with new (tofurous wordpress) blogs and others using brushes I had told you about or free downloads we have found for you. I saw one with a logo I made and several other things that were Go4Pro... The point is, it's great seeing that this information is useful (nope, the point was not that I'm a blog stalker - shoot did I just admit that?)
Any how. Thank you for reading. Thank you for inspiring me. Go{4}Pro is taking some new turns and along with our new look we are going to be doing some new stuff too (yep, thats a we, not just a me)... So stay tuned!

Oh and FEEL FREE to take this cute little Go{4} Pro button and post it on your blog! If I'm blog stalking (I mean admiring from a far) your blog (you have to be a fan) and find it there, you will be getting a very cool surprise!

FREE Professional Photography Blog - Thats Right!!

I just launched my new blog today and I'm so excited about it! As photographers it's crucial that we have great blogs. Thats where potential clients look the most, why? It's always being updated where as our websites don't get attention quite as much.

I was with blogger. Started out happy (loved that it was free) but soon started having two BIG issuess. 1. The Image size. I wanted clients and potential clients to see a large crisp image. 2. I was not happy with the color quality! Below is a screen shot (remember this is blogger again so it's adding the green cast to the left image but look how bad the right side is). To better see the contrast here is the old blog and the new blog.

I knew I wanted a new blog (badly) but as I started looking into pricing I was not happy. It seemed that my blog was going to cost more (a lot more) than my website did. But one day as I clicked around from blog to blog I found my answer!

Tofurious. Lawrence Chan of Tofurious has created a blog theme specifically for photographers that is completely customizable. Here is the demo.

Now I had a plan! Implementing the plan was a little more in depth. "I am NOT computer savvy" is a vast understatement. But I saw the video tutorials and figured I would give it a go! Lawrence recommend Blue Host and has video tutorials on how to get it up and going. Knowing that I had no chance without the most basic step by step, I did exactly what he recommended every step of the way (or so I thought). At 3am - 7 hours after starting this little project I called BlueHost for support (so awesome to be open 24/7!) and with a lot of work on their end they finally figured out what I'd managed to screw up and got me up and running. There is was the TOFU web blog... Only problem, I'm not Tofurious. After the time I put into getting it up and going I made a VERY WISE choice!!

I contacted Danella ( djmiller@interbel.net ), recommended by Lawrence Chan to help me with my customization. {Insert choirs singing}. Danella got RIGHT back to me, I sent her a little mock up (see mock up below) that I'd created while I was trying to decide what I wanted to do along with the digital elements (don't forget you MUST have the commercial rights) and she worked her uber fab magic and had my blog up and going the NEXT DAY!

Can you imagine how long it would have taken me? And mine certainly wouldn't have come out as great as what Danella ( djmiller@interbel.net ) created for me! It could have been months maybe even years of frustration and tears over my illiteracy with electronics! I just wish I'd had her set it up from the start and save me from a long night of no sleep!
So there it is, my NEW BLOG! Up and going for under $150 dollars!

A few things to note. The Tofurious Blog Them has two options the FREE download and the more advanced version for only $30 (has flash banner, here is the DEMO for the $30 version). The only reason I did not go with the $30 version is that I already have flash on my website making it so iPhones and other devices can not view it. I wanted to make sure that one of my sites was viewable from anything so I opted for no flash. If I did not have my website and this was going to be my website - I would have definitely opted for the $30 version!
The Blog Theme has step by step video instructions for installation however if you are lacking computer smarts or just don't feel like investing the time into getting it all up and going. I highly recommend that you email Danella ( djmiller@interbel.net ). Her prices are a steal and the aspirin you avoid popping do to the immense headache you now have is worth every penny!
Last thought. The theme is free or $30 bucks. Word Press is free. So all you are paying for is hosting and blog installation if you need it. This is a great deal!

HAPPY BLOGGING!

Sunday

Happy Monday - Here is a FREEBIE!

Last week I stumbled on Sassy Designs on Etsy! Her prices are fantastic, she had these great design elements I'd never seen before and I so I bought them both (she's added a third since) immediately knowing that this was going to make my Christmas designing go much faster! Than I thought of you! I shot her an email and asked if she would want to do something for the go4pro gang. Well... She rocks! She came up with a brilliant idea, she is giving all of you an exclusive page element just for go4pro as well as 2 of her awesome papers. So you have everything you need to try it out!

Happy Monday! And a huge THANKS to Terry of Sassy Designs!

GIVEAWAY - Camera Strap

AND THE WINNER IS RPATTERSON (Comment 15),
selected with Random.org - CONGRATULATIONS!!

Meet Karie. Karie is dreaming of a new lens and she's hoping to get closer to that new lens with these cute camera straps. I stumbled on her blog and felt sympathetic to her cause, creativity is often at it's finest when motivated by desire! So I offered to do a giveaway so that (a.) one on you will be sporting a new fun strap and (b.) more people might see them, want them, buy them and get her closer to that lens. Only $12.50 or $10 each when you buy 2 or more.

The Rules:

For 1 vote leave a comment and make sure your email is available.

For MORE voting power link this blog to your blog, facebook, twitter or myspace than post a comment with the links. Each link is more voting power!

*Most importantly - make sure I can get ahold of you if you win!*

All entries must be in by Monday, July 13th. I'll draw the winner on Tuesday, July 14th.

Good Luck!
